By the time you have finished reading this you will know there is a better way to learn to drive, where you can feel comfortable and in control. By the end of your first lesson you will know that nobody is going to pressure you into doing anything you feel uncomfortable with.
Feeling nervous about the prospect of learning to drive is remarkably common, but few people talk about it. It isn’t “cool” to say you are anxious when it comes to driving – but trust me, lots of people are just like you.
It is perfectly normal to have confidence issues, as driving isn’t really a natural activity. What is happening is just your central nervous system saying “hold on, are we safe?”
The secret is patience and working within your comfort zone. For example, think of a baby learning to walk – they shuffle, crawl and work up to standing while holding onto something solid. Only once they feel safe and confident do they start to walk (and run!) alone.
So, here you are in my car. You know it is a safe place. You know there are dual controls and I can use them whenever necessary. We then work on aspects of driving you feel safe and comfortable with. Over time, as you develop your skills, the more in control you will feel.
If you find some aspect of driving particularly difficult (manouvres, roundabouts – anything), you and I will work together as a team to tackle them. If necessary, I can take total control of the car from my seat, and drive to a safe place to let you take a short break.
